Bishop Francis Herman Gow   was born in Cape Town 29 September 1887 . He became the 74th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Francis Herman Gow completed both his primary- and secondary education in District Six, Cape Town. He left South Africa in 1904 to further his studies in America. He returned to South Africa to become principal of the Wilberforce Theological School in Johannesburg. On his return to Cape Town in 1934 he served at Bethel Memorial AME Church in District Six, Cape Town.   His father, Francis McDonald Gow, was a West-Indian citizen who immigrated to South Africa in the early 1880’s. Gow (Sr.) moved to District Six, Cape Town, where he became a full time photographer. When the AME Church was organised in District Six, Cape Town in 1898, Gow Sr. became a member. History of AME church in Southern Africa

  The beginnings of the AME in South Africa is influenced by Mangena Mokone, Charlotte Manye Maxeke, Jacobus G. Xaba, James Mata Dwane and the Ethiopian Movement. Mangena Maake Mokone and other blacks, formerly in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, established the Ethiopian Church and laid foundations for an eventual union with the AMEs.  The common racial and religious origins of African Methodists on both continents resonated with ministers and members in the AME and Ethiopian churches and moved them, perhaps inevitably, toward merger. Two local preachers elsewhere in the province in January 1893 also joined with Mokone. A black pastor in the Orange Free State, Jacobus G. Xaba, a Zulu, had been barred from his pulpit because of alleged disobedience to a white superior and then, with others, was arrested and incarcerated.   Sarah Allen Sarah Allen (also known as Sara Allen and Mother Allen; née Bass; (1764 – July 16, 1849) was an American abolitionist and missionary for the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She is known within the AME Church as The Founding Mother.  Sarah Bass was born in 1764 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, as a slave. When she was eight, she was sent to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was previously married and was the widow. She was hired as a nurse during Philadelphia’s 1793 yellow fever epidemic. They commended her and other black nurses because they endangered themselves while helping victims of the deadly plague. Additionally, she assisted “several families” without compensation, and when offered money she left the decision to “those she served.” . That year she met Richard Allen. They married by 1801.
